The year is 2045. After the Global Simultaneous Default-an economic catastrophe that destabilized every nation-and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, the world has descended into the Sustainable War, a conflict designed to last indefinitely. In this bleak near future, society hasn’t yet collapsed enough for people to feel the existential threat posed by A.I. in their everyday lives. To counter cybercrimes committed by the Posthumans, a newly emerged type of human, Public Security Section 9, led by the fully cyberized Kusanagi Motoko, arrives in Tokyo, now a war-torn ruin. There, they encounter a refugee faction calling itself "N" and a hostile American Special Forces unit. With the looming threat of nuclear war triggered by a hijacked submarine, tensions escalate into a three-way clash between Section 9, the Americans, and the Posthumans.
