In a future Japan, the government enforces a program called "The Red Threads of Science" to address declining birthrates by assigning marriage partners to citizens at age 16. The system uses compatibility algorithms, and refusal comes with harsh consequences. Yukari Nejima, an unremarkable teenager, sees this as his best chance at a stable future-until he impulsively confesses his love to his longtime crush, Misaki Takasaki. To his surprise, she returns his feelings. Just as their romance begins, Yukari receives his government-assigned partner: Ririna Sanada, who is far from pleased with the arrangement. Yet instead of rejecting him, Ririna becomes oddly intrigued by his forbidden relationship with Misaki. Caught between duty and desire, Yukari finds himself tangled in a mess of secrets and conflicting emotions.
