Rascal the Raccoon
In 1914, in the town of Breisford, Wisconsin, near Lake Koshgonong, a young boy named Sterling discovers a raccoon cub in the forest after its mother is killed by a hunter. He takes the cub home, nurses it back to health, and names it Rascal. The two quickly become inseparable, though Sterling soon learns that raising a wild animal isn’t easy-especially after Rascal wreaks havoc in the neighbors’ gardens. This marks the beginning of Sterling’s final, unforgettable year of childhood, filled with big and small adventures alongside Rascal and his other beloved animal friends, Oscar and Alice. But the year is also shadowed by hardship: the death of his mother and his father’s financial ruin, as he loses nearly everything repaying debts.
