Fifteen years after the catastrophic Second Impact, humanity faces a new danger: giant beings called Angels attack Tokyo-3 one after another. Conventional weapons and tactics fail against them, leaving NERV-a shadowy organization led by the distant Gendou Ikari-as mankind’s last hope. NERV fights the Angels using towering humanoid machines called "Evangelions," equipped with cutting-edge weapons and defensive shields known as Absolute Terror Fields. Shinji Ikari, Gendou’s 14-year-old son, returns to Tokyo-3 after years of abandonment. Struggling with deep-seated trauma from his mother’s death and his father’s neglect, Shinji isolates himself emotionally-until he meets Misato Katsuragi, a 29-year-old NERV officer who treats him with an unexpected warmth he’s never known. When a devastating Angel attack strikes, Gendou reveals his real reason for summoning Shinji: he is the only one who can effectively pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a machine uniquely attuned to him. Though piloting the Evangelion inflicts severe psychological strain, Shinji fights to protect Tokyo-3, unaware of his father’s hidden agenda.
