Miss Hokusai

The year is 1814, and the bustling city of Edo-later known as Tokyo-is alive with peasants, samurai, merchants, nobles, artists, and courtesans, not to mention whispers of the supernatural. Tetsuzo, a renowned artist in his fifties, has clients across Japan. He works tirelessly in his cluttered, chaotic home studio, producing everything from a massive Bodhidharma painting on a 180-square-meter sheet of paper to tiny sparrows painted on a single grain of rice. Short-tempered and sarcastic, he has little interest in money or sake, demanding exorbitant fees for commissions that don’t excite him. O-Ei, his 23-year-old daughter from his second marriage, shares his talent and stubbornness. Outspoken and skilled, she often paints in his place-though never credited. Her work is so striking it sometimes causes trouble. "We’re father and daughter," she says. "With two brushes and four chopsticks, we’ll always get by, one way or another." Years later, Europe would recognize Tetsuzo’s genius under one of his many names: Katsushika Hokusai. His art would inspire masters like Renoir, van Gogh, Monet, and Klimt. Yet few know of O-Ei, the woman who worked beside him for decades, shaping his legacy while remaining invisible. This is her untold story-a vivid glimpse of a spirited woman living in the shadow of her legendary father, unfolding with the turning seasons.
