Networks span the globe, and the information age has reached its peak. Society now exists in two distinct worlds-the physical one we live in and "wired," the vast virtual realm of the network. Soma Toru is part of Steppen Wolf, a hacking group that moves freely through this digital landscape. During their final operation-an attack on the UN forces' database-Toru loses Nonomura Yuya, his friend and team leader. Captured by the military, Toru strikes a deal: his freedom in exchange for working with the UN Security Force Information Administration Bureau, an anti-hacker unit. Now working for the very people who arrested him, Toru searches for the one responsible for his friend's death, while his new teammates each have their own reasons for fighting. A three-way conflict rages daily between terrorists, security firms, and the military.
