Benio Hanamura is a 17-year-old girl living in Tokyo during the Taisho era. After losing her mother at a young age, she was raised by her father, a high-ranking army official. This upbringing has shaped her into a tomboy who defies traditional expectations for women-she practices kendo, enjoys sake, wears bold Western-style clothing, and prefers literature over domestic chores. She also opposes arranged marriages, believing women should have the freedom to choose their own careers and marry for love. Her closest friends are Tamaki, a graceful yet equally progressive young woman, and Ranmaru, a kabuki actor trained in female roles who has naturally refined, delicate mannerisms.
