Tamai Shiina, a bright and energetic schoolgirl, spends her summer vacation at her grandparents' house. One day, she encounters a peculiar little creature and quickly befriends it, naming it "Hoshimaru: The Round Star." When summer ends and Shiina returns home to resume school, she discovers other children who have also formed bonds with similar strange creatures. However, she soon learns that not all of these creatures-or their human companions-are as kind as Hoshimaru.
