Twenty-two years ago, a bizarre environmental event in Kanazawa Prefecture split the land and thrust it upward to staggering heights, forming the isolated region now called "The Lost Ground." Kazuma, a young mercenary, scrapes by in this harsh environment, taking whatever jobs he can to survive. He possesses a rare ability known as "Alter," which lets him coat his right arm and torso in a metallic alloy. His life takes a dramatic turn when he crosses paths with "HOLY," an organization dedicated to hunting down so-called "Native Alter Users." Among HOLY's elite is Ryuho, and their meeting sparks a fierce rivalry between them.
