Mind Game

Nishi spots his high school sweetheart, Myon, jumping onto a subway at the last second-only for her ankle to get crushed in the doors. Reuniting with her, he realizes he’s still deeply in love, but she’s engaged to someone else. At her family’s yakitori restaurant, Nishi meets her fiancé, but the gathering turns violent when yakuza members burst in. When they try to assault Myon, Nishi intervenes and is killed. After death, Nishi encounters a shapeshifting god who taunts him for dying. Offered a chance to vanish into nothingness, Nishi refuses and bolts past the god, resurrecting himself. Armed with a fresh perspective and foreknowledge of the yakuza’s attack, he fights back, killing one of them with their own gun before escaping with Myon and her sister in a stolen car. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa, "Mind Game" uses ever-changing visuals to tell a story about seizing life without hesitation, standing apart from anything else.
