Kazuhiko Nukumizu, a first-year high school student, knows little about teenage romance but sometimes imagines how he’d handle it if his life became a love story. Content with his quiet, introverted life as a self-described "background character," he prefers staying out of the spotlight. But that changes when he accidentally sees his popular classmate, Anna Yanami, get rejected by her childhood friend in a family restaurant. Though Nukumizu wants to forget the whole thing, Anna insists on pouring her heart out to him, venting about her doomed fate as a childhood friend destined to lose the one she loves. Before he knows it, he’s pulled into Anna’s messy love life-and then dragged into the romantic struggles of two more girls: Lemon Yakishio, an energetic track and field athlete, and Chika Komari, a reserved literature club member. Suddenly, Nukumizu is no longer a background character but an unwilling participant in the complicated lives of three girls who keep losing in love.
