Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden - S01

"Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Gaiden (1999)" is the second of two OVA adaptations based on side stories from the "Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu" novels. This installment explores Yang Wen-li's early career in the Free Planets Alliance before the pivotal Battle of Astarte, alongside further glimpses into Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis' rise in the Galactic Empire. *"Spiral Labyrinth"" After earning fame for evacuating civilians from El Facil, Yang receives an unofficial double promotion and media attention. He delves into research on the "Year 730 Mafia," a tight-knit circle of Alliance officers led by the legendary tactician Bruce Ashbey. Yang investigates a bombshell claim from Ashbey's widow-that he wasn’t killed in battle but was murdered, a revelation that could shake the Alliance’s political landscape. ""The Mutineer"" Reinhard and Kircheis are stationed on the destroyer Hameln II at Iserlohn Fortress. When the captain is critically injured, he hands command to Reinhard, forcing the young officer to prove his leadership to the skeptical crew. ""The Duelist"" While serving in the Imperial capital Odin, Reinhard discovers a mining rights dispute involving Dorothea von Schaffhausen, a friend of his sister Annerose. Learning that Count Herxheimer plans to resolve the matter through a duel, Reinhard steps in to fight on the Schaffhausen family’s behalf. ""The Retriever"" After losing favor with the nobility, Count Herxheimer attempts to flee to the Free Planets Alliance, stealing a Seffle particle generator prototype. Reinhard is ordered to retrieve both the fugitive and the device, but due to the mission’s secrecy, he’s given only the cruiser Hässliche Entlein for the task. ""The Third Battle of Tiamat"* To mark Kaiser Friedrich IV’s 30th year in power, the Empire launches a major offensive against the Alliance. As the Imperial fleet clashes with three Alliance armadas, Reinhard’s decisive actions shift the course of the battle.
