Night City is a futuristic California metropolis where dreams go to die. David Martinez, a teenager living in the city’s slums, is determined to honor his mother’s dream-seeing him rise to the top of Arasaka, the world’s most powerful security corporation. He studies at the elite Arasaka Academy while his mother struggles to support them both. After a violent run-in with a street gang upends David’s life, he discovers Sandevistan cyberware, a prosthetic that gives its user inhuman speed. Blinded by anger, he implants it in his spine and uses it to take revenge on one of his attackers. The act gets him expelled from the academy, crushing any chance of making his mother proud. Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada, a skilled data thief, sees David’s potential and offers him a way out. But working with Lucy pulls him into the dangerous world of Edgerunners-cyborg mercenaries who will do anything for money. Most Edgerunners die young, either from the job or from the cyberware destroying their minds. Yet in a city where the system is rigged against him, David is willing to gamble everything to survive.
