Advances in technology have led to the creation of hIEs-human-like robots that serve as public assistants and personal helpers. Arato Endou, a kind-hearted high school student, treats these machines as equals, though his limited finances prevent him from ever owning one. His ordinary life takes a drastic turn during a routine trip to the grocery store, where he’s violently attacked by a hacked hIE and left near death. He’s rescued by an unusual hIE named Lacia, who carries a weaponized coffin. She is one of five highly advanced hIEs that recently escaped from the shadowy MemeFrame Corporation. When a hacked car threatens to kill them, Lacia proposes a deal: she’ll save Arato’s life if he registers as her owner, making him legally responsible for her actions. With no other option, he agrees, letting her move into his home. As Lacia settles into this quiet new life, she warns the captivated Arato of one thing-she has no soul.
