Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, has located Mewtwo in a secluded part of the Johto region. While attempting to reclaim Mewtwo, Giovanni's plans are complicated when Ash and his friends are taken hostage by Domino, a new Team Rocket operative, as they try to save Pikachu from Jessie and James. The cloned Pokemon are also captured and used as leverage to lure Mewtwo. The conflict turns into a struggle of dominance between Giovanni and Mewtwo, while Mewtwo wrestles with its own existence-questioning whether it and the other clones, born from science, have any true purpose in life.
